Velocity and Scalar Measurements in Turbulent Premixed and Stratified Methane/Air

In many practical systems such as internal combustion engines and gas turbines, by accident or design, flames often propagate through fuel-oxidizer mixtures with spatial variation in composition. These flames are referred as stratified flames which are the subject of this talk.

Turbulent stratified flames stabilized by the bluff body on a lab-scale co-annular swirl burner are studied using several laser optical diagnostics. 2D particle image velocimetry, high speed stereo particle image velocimetry, and pairwise laser Doppler anemometry are used separately to characterize the flow fields of the flames. Simultaneous Rayleigh scattering imaging and planar laser induced fluorescence of OH are used to study the planar thermal structure of these flames. Results indicates that both the flow fields and thermal structures of these flames are primarily influenced by levels of fuel stratification and swirl.
